First off, there were two old storage sets online of 5 gig each - without them we possibly would have enough storage at 15 gig - although it would have been close. But the current level of 15 gig base, plus the 10 gig paid-for top-up, should certainly be enough.

All old storage sets are now cleared - these can be accessed and deleted via Windows Explorer / Computer / Norton Backup Drive.

There are now two backups: LocalDrive and Online. LocalDrive has all files present: Online is yet to be completed.

Everything except Pictures is on Online: the remaining files are about 13.6 gig = 13,900 Meg. At the measured upload rate of 2.5 Meg / minute, this will take about 93 hours to complete: about 1% per hour.

Partial uploads to seem to successfully add files to the backup, so repeated attempts should eventually achieve a full initial backup. But evidence on ths point is mixed!

I have changed Control Panel / Power Options as follows:

  • Put computer to sleep: 30 min => Never
  • Advanced / Hard Disk: 20 min => Never
  • Advanced / Sleep / Sleep Afer: 60 min => Never
  • Advanced / Sleep / Hibernate After: 1080 min => Never

(See the mail below more on why I've done that)

If we can't get this to work, we should use Backblaze. Easy to use and the 50 USD / year price for unlimited storage is comparable to (slightly cheaper, I think?) than the payment to Norton for the 10 gig top-up.

There may be multiple issues affecting your backup in this instance. It could be any combination of the following or just one of them. Any one of the below instances would interrupt your restore or backup.

1) Your ISP resetting your internet connection in the middle of the night.

2) Your PC going to sleep, system stand by, hibernate, or HD suspend.

3) Your internet connection going to sleep.

To double check the above settings and possibly correct.

1) Nothing we, or you can do to fix other than try backing up in smaller sets.

2) Go into your control panel and go to "Power Options". On the right click on "Change Plan Settings". For plugged in only change Sleep to NEVER. (The monitor has no affect on backups.) Next click on "Change advanced power settings".

 In this window change the setting for Hard Disk to NEVER for plugged in only. Verify that both Sleep and Hibernate are both set to NEVER for plugged in. Click OK.

3) This change is optional and for advanced users. If your internet connection is going to sleep after the settings are confirmed in step 2 then please contact Norton Customer Support for assistance.

At this point since your backup hasn't completed successfully, the part that is incomplete has been sent to the server. (Which could be 1/2 of all the files selected and not one complete file.) When trouble shooting we would suggest canceling the backup, clearing the backup folder, and then selecting a smaller set to backup. Then once that completes to add more data in, in smaller sets over a period of time to get the rest of your required files. Example: Tonight backup 2-5 GB as a test, and then tomorrow night add 5 GB more to your backup file selection. Continuing every night till all of your files are added back into your backup set.
